Solving Structures by NMR

1. Find the pieces or structure fragments

Common Fragments - CH3, CH2, CH

Use Integration to tell you:
CH3, CH2, CH

Number of substituents on an aromatic ring
e.g. if the integral is 4 it is disubstituted

Use Chemical Shift to tell you
Presence of functional groups and which fragment it is connected to

2. Connect the fragments

Use spin-spin splittingto tell you connectivity

3. Check the structure -

Make sure it fits the molecular formula

Assign each peak in the spectrum
