Research

Dr Hartshorn is involved in research on science education. She is studying better ways to teach General Chemistry using cooperative group work and group activities She gave a poster on this topic at the San Diego meeting of the American Chemical Society in the Spring of 2000

Lynn also continued other work on Science Education, including a research project for SciMathMN . This organization is a statewide group that consists of college and university science and math teachers, faculty from education departments and representatives from schools and industry. Their objectives are to improve science and mathematics teaching at the K –12 levels throughout the state of Minnesota, and to help teaching to be aligned with the National Standards in science and math education. Lynn belongs to the research sub-group of this organisation, the TRN or teachers' research network. TRN members are involved in observing how science is taught in schools throughout the state.

Outreach Projects

Lynn's outreach activities include Science Workshops for Elementary Teachers (these have been funded by Eisenhower grants and by an NSF grant to Minneapolis Public Schools). She is also a coordinator for the state final of the Annual High School Science Olympiad, which has been held at St Thomas for several years. She has organized various chemistry demonstrations in local schools and worked with Girl Scouts. She is a judge of the State High School Science Fair and local science fairs.
